Town Vis is located on the northeast side of the island and it is the most inhabited place at the island. The origin of this area dates from the 4th century BC, when the Syracuse ruler Dionysus the Elder founded the settlement Issa. The remainings of that ancient settlement can be seen at the location Gradina at the peninsula Pirovo. In the 15th century, a two small settlements Kut and Luka were founded and represent the foundations of today’s modern town Vis. On your walk through the town you can see numerous old stone buildings and churches that speak about the island rich history. Komiža is located on the sunny side of the island in the large bay and its famous for its fishermen. It looks to the open sea at the two small islands – Biševo and Svetac. Komiža has a several pebble beaches and the most popular is Kamenice were you can enjoy in natrual shades of tamarix, clear sea and summer parties. It is also known for a fish market were you have a great choice of freshly caught fish. The best way to arrive to Komiža is with a car from the island Vis, because ferryboats don`t come here.
Rukavac was once a small fishermen settlement located at the southeastern side of the island Vis. Today is a popular tourist resort and the largest place at the southern side of the island.
A beautiful pebble beach Srebrna is located in this area as well as natural phenomena the Green Cave. The sea is rich with fish and is a great destination for those who enjoy in underwater fishing. And the crystal clear sea is ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Biševo is a small inhabited island only 5 km southwest from the island Vis and it has ferry connections only with Vis.The island was inhabited from ancient times and today there are remains of the old church from the 11th century, vineyards and olive groves. The island is surrounded with the high cliffs and it has numerous caves. The most famous are Blue Cave and Monk seal cave that are truly a unique geomorphological phonemes. The sea around the island hides airplane and boat wreckages from different battles.
